History of Women’s Participation
There have been countless gender disparities and biases throughout yesteryear. Consequently, Women’s social roles in many ancient cultures were restricted to housework and childcare. This has affected all parts of life, including sports. Even as recently as 1900, women were not permitted to compete in the most prominent sporting events like Olympic Games; until recently, sexist beliefs that interdict women from participating in specific sports remained prevalent. That scenario has fortunately altered over time, and females can now participate and compete in any sporting competition and event. Hence, women are now practicing and acknowledging the importance of sports in many distinct ways.
Importance of Sports
Particularly, sport does have the potential to transform people’s lives. It has the ability to promote gender equality by inculcating in women and girls team spirit, identity, perseverance, and confidence. Moreover, the sports activities work to accelerate efforts to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, close the investment gap in women’s sports and promote equal economic opportunities, and to encourage women’s equal willingness to participate and bias-free recognition in media. In addition, sports events exercise the provision of equivalent opportunities for girls in sport, physical activity, and physical education.
